WHAT IS A CHIPPER/SHREDDER?

what-is-chippershredder

A chipper or shredder is a machine used for reducing wood into smaller woodchips and and used to reduce green waste normally for professional needs. Usually, they are portable, as they are mounted on wheels on frames suitable for towing behind a truck. They have an internal combustion engine, normally starting from 3 horsepower – 2.2 kW – up to 1,000 – 750 kW. Some models can also have a separate engine.
A tree limb entries the hopper and the chips exit through a chute. Normally, the chips measures from 1 inch (2.5 cm) up to 2 inches (5.1 cm). They can be spread as a ground cover or fed into a digester during papermaking.

OTHER TYPES OF CHIPPERS AND SHREDDERS

There are other types of chippers and shredders, which are used for the most disparate reasons:

  • Shredders for the crushing of waste: Shredders are often used in scrap recycling, for example in car recycling companies. The body shell is first pressed and then divided by a hammer mill in small, about fist-sized parts. According to their mass, the parts are ejected to different degrees and thereby separated, magnetizable metals deposited by means of electromagnets. This enables the disposal company to sort the residual materials as accurately as possible for subsequent recycling;
  • Shredders for garden waste: the most „normal“ purpose;
  • Choppers in traditional agriculture: for example, used for crushing crops;
  • Shredders in industrial factory farming;
  • Shredding of paper: mostly in the office environment, especially in areas dealing with sensitive paper-based data.
