Machines for public and sports green maintenance

A flail mower is a type of powered garden/agricultural machine used to deal with heavier grass/scrub that a classic lawn mower could not deal with. Moreover, the flail mower is best suited or areas where thrown objects would cause damage. Some smaller models are self-powered, but many are PTO driven implements, which can attach to the three-point hitches found on the rear of most tractors.

The name „flail mower“ comes from the use of “flails” attached to its rotating horizontal drum (also called tube, rotor, or axle). They are also called knives or blades. The rows of flails are usually staggered to provide a complete cut. The flails are attached to the drum using chain links or brackets, depending on the manufacturer.

The various flail mowers can be distinguished by many parts:

  • Frame: plastic, Steel sheet, die-cast aluminium.
  • Motor: the engine of the machine varies significantly according to the needs of the user, but

above all due to the size of the land held in the lawn and as for the brush cutter, they exist

with external combustion engine or electric motor.

  • Traction: The simplest ones adopt a gear change similar to that of cars, 2-3 gears to be grafted according to the characteristics of the terrain, the most sophisticated models adopt a continuously variable gearbox, that is, using a lever you can adjust the speed progressively.

There are various sizes, the width of the cutting area is proportional to the length of the rotating blade, on this the width of the machine is based; the choice of cutting diameter and power, is made according to your needs, such as square meters to be cut, terrain conformation, etc.
