A YEAR OF BOWLING GREEN MAINTENANCE
The maintenance of a bowling green is not an easy task. Let’s see how it works, starting in the Spring period, at the beginning of March. Please take into consideration that, according to the location, whether more in the South or in the North, the timing can change.
FIRST PART OF THE YEAR
Until mid /late March, we should apply fertilizer and check all the equipment. The height of the cut should be lowered to around six millimeters and the mowing frequency should be up to twice per week.
More or less two weeks after applying the fertilizer, the green should be spiked with chisel or pencil tines. Mow to remove debris and spray with wetting agent. Mow up to three times per week (minimum), with a height of five millimeters. The green should be rolled every week, at least once. If the weather is dry, watering will be required every three days.
SECOND PART OF THE YEAR
Intensive deep spiking is required, either by slitting or in severe situations by verti-draining as well. Hollow coring should be avoided if possible but in determined situations can be used. Apply wetting agent and the Autumn fertilizer.
The cutting height should now be raised to seven mil and mowing should be made just once per week until the end of October. Afther that, keep trimmed as necessary over the Winter. The green should be mowed at least in four different directions alternately.
During the Winter months, check that leaves are not smothering the surface. If necessary, apply insecticide and deep spike once per month.
As you can see, green maintenance is not an easy thing, but if it is done with passion, the results will speak for themselves.
